Story Map

This is my story map for my digital story project.  I have chosen to make a video explaining enharmonics and sharps and flats to my students.  I have made a parody of the Katy Perry song, "Dark Horse," which I will sing and use for the script of my video. I will then take videos/pictures of certain scenes and show them while the song is playing.  My story map is below.

Story Script

Below you will find the lyrics to my parody of "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry.  The parody - which will explain enharmonics as they relate to band fingering charts - will be the script for my digital story.  You will also find a karaoke version of Katy Perry's song.  You can play the recording and sing the lyrics I wrote if you would like to get a feel for how it will sound.  I plan on finding a karaoke track that is better quality than the one below.

Intro

Yeah...you wanna know what it is?

Enharmonics... Let's learn!

Verse 1

You want to know...why are there 2 notes in here

even though...they are the same fingering?

Well here we go...you better listen carefully...carefully...carefully

There's an E and and Fb - crazy -

in the same box but maybe...it's because they, they sound the same, they sound the same, s-s-s-sound the same

Pre Chorus

There's a pattern to it - music it follows rules.

You've got sharps and flats here - they'll own you or they'll be your tools.

Chorus

Add a flat, add a flat and it drops like that, drops like that.

Add a sharp, add a sharp...it goes up a step.

Instrumental

Verse 2

Let's start with G and we'll add a flat to it

And you'll see it goes down by one 1/2 step

Now look at F and we'll add a sharp to it...which makes it go

up one 1/2 step

Gb and F# they sound the same

now that you know the rules you can play the game

but you should know...that with great power comes...

great....responsibility

PreChorus

Chorus

Bridge/Rap

Uh

If you have a question just follow the rules.

Look at a piano and whip out your tools.

Find the notes in question and see if they match

If you find they're twinsies, there's no strings attached.

Let's start with this A# right next to this Bb

find the A# on the piano put your finger on it just like that.

Now find the Bb - they share a key!

It looks like we found an enharmonic - Whoopee!

You'll find enharmonics can relate to phonics -

they're the synonyms of sound.

Synonyms are 2 different words that mean the same thing like found...and discovered, and close and shut, and object and thing

Just like enharmonics look different but sound the same when they sing.

PreChorus

Chorus

Anthro Tech Assignment

I gathered information about the technology available, and the policies associated with said technology, at the two schools at which I work (Talkeetna and Trapper Creek Elementaries).  This is a great activity for any teacher new to a school to engage in.  I will probably ask questions like this if I teach at a new school in the future.  I didn't know what I was missing out on.

MatEDTech ePortfolio

On this page, you will find my ePortfolio for the MatEdTech class taught by Jason Ohler.  I will post all of my work for this class in chronological order backwards.  (So, my newest work will be at the top and oldest work at the bottom.)  Enjoy!

Story Table

This PDF contains my story table.  In the left-hand column of the story table, you will find my script, and in the right-hand column what I plan to provide as a visual to support the script.  When combined, the script and the visuals will create my digital story about enharmonics.

Enharmonics Video

It's finally done!  Enjoy!  We had so much fun creating it.  This is the first video I have ever edited and it was actually kind of fun.

It took me 1 hour to create the props necessary for the video, 2 hours to film with the students, probably about an hour communicating with parents (permission slips, letters home, phone calls, emails, and texts.), and it took 6 hours to edit the video.  That's about 10 hours of work total.  For the reward, I would do it again.  I really enjoyed working with the kids and I have been told by both students and adults that the content came through.  I was worried that my idea of what would make sense was not accurate but apparently the video worked out!

I think that my ideas would not have been understandable if it had not been for creating a story table.  I will do this in the future if/when I make a video like this again.

Since making this video, I have gained the confidence to try other video projects.  For example, I am interested in creating a video kind of like the ones below but with my students in it instead of muppets or random people from the internet.  My students would love it and I think I might be able to do it.  I never would have DREAMED of attempting something like this if it hadn't have been for this project.

My ILP - Start Using Edmodo

This Word document contains my Individualized Learning Plan write-up.  I have been wanting a way in which to communicate with students online that is secure for a while now and Edmodo will be perfect.  I think that Edmodo might be the coolest thing I have encountered this semester.  I just can't get enough of it.

Online Community Write-Up

This Word document contains my write-up of my experience in online communities related to teaching music.  I had to get involved in a few to get what I needed but all of them offered great tools to help me become a better music teacher.

Digital Story Rubric

This Word document contains a Digital Story Rubric that I might use if my students were to create a digital story.
